Smart Satan or baseless mythology?

What strange images and myths did the Greeks have about people who lived in far off lands? Do such myths still exist?

These were two questions posed before my class as part of a discussion on the rise of global media. The class discussion began with the understanding that in the olden days, ordinary lay people did not travel much, but were curious about the world around them. The few 'adventurers' who did travel came back with interesting stories, which passed down through oral culture with the occasional tinge of exaggeration. Over the years imagination got the better of people and myths were created. The Greeks came up with some of the most fascinating mythology of all time.

In order to do a little background research into what would later amalgamate into an interestin theory, I googled Greek gods and conducted a very rough parallel study between them and the Roman gods. I'm still a little stumped by what I came across.

I began with the understanding that although The Greek and the Roman civilizations began much after the Jewish and the Mesopotamian civilizations, they created the understanding of their Gods from within their own cultures. It is generally percieved that the Greek gods could also have had their origins from the preceding Egyptian or Phoenician civilizations. However, the understanding and naming of Greek gods took place much before the birth of Christ or the dawn of Christianity as we know it. Keeping this in mind, I continued drawing parallels between the understanding of deities in the Greek and the Roman regimes. That's when I came across this site: http://www.purplehell.com/riddletools/g-list.htm
Here are some interesting observations:

  1. The Greeks could have come up with any fictional name for their gods, or even adapted the names of these gods from preceding cultures. Therefore the names such as Zeus, or Ares didn't make much of a difference to me.

  2. I came down the list of names until I saw the name Aphrodite: the Goddess of Love and Beauty. Interesting to note that her Roman equivalent was Venus (now percieved as a planet that is presently referred to as the bright and morning star).

  3. I immediately hit the Ctrl+F button to check for any parallels with any other god named Venus. Here's what I found: Greek god named Hesperus who is considered the "Evening Star" and the personification of Venus (personification of the bright and morning star). Even more interesting was that the equivalent in the Roman god was called Vesper also known as Lux-Ferre or Lucifer!!

  4. Quite stunned by the fact that the Romans had named a god after what we know to be Satan, i ran a search for the alternate name of Hesperus, which is Phosphorus. Here's what I found: Phosphorus: also known as Phosphor: the "Light bearer" "god that brings in the day". Light-bearer??? Before my mind could resolve the question my eyes hit the Roman equivalent of the Greek god. The Roman god was named "Lucifer"- straight out..

  5. Its rather interesting to notice how Lucifer was worshipped by the Romans as the "Light-bringer", "Star that brings in the day", "personification of the planet Venus", which in turn was "Goddess of Love"

Interestin eh? I haven't drawn any conclusions yet, but i'm open to viewpoints...

  2. There is much more to this than meets the eye. The Roman and Greek Gods and Goddesses (which you haven't mentioned) did not originate from complete mythology. The supernatural powers that the "holy men" of that age possessed cannot be debated. Your flow of thought is unique and you must continue writing. Good start.

  4. Lucifer might try and act smart. But our God is much smarter. Thats why people have stopped worshipping those dumb gods while the god of the israelites Yahweh - Jehovah is still worshipped by people all over the world.

  7. fancy stuff!... i cant get a conclusion either but somehow every greek priest and roman priest existed mostly or atleast the priests of relevance existed only in B.C... and draw their timelines to B.C... and also greek mythology claims that when the Gods came to exist they came out of the titans im not sure about the titans but the Gods have parallels to Gods from every religion including christianity... atleaset to a small extent (all of this in B.C that is... and they all come in 3s like Zeus, Ares and Poseidon who of course are all somehow rooted on nature (Zeus-sky,Ares - land (but it becomes hell) and Poseidon-sea (like duh! :) ) and from them come all the other Gods except for one or 2 im not sure about... but aphrodite, athena, hermes, hephastatus and all under the big 3 and were even created by them and basically took care of everything like one of thems the sun and ones the moon, and their decendants followed their proffesions like all the blacksmiths decended from hephastatus and so on... also it had a lot of heroes like hercules and all the demigods...

    Hinduism:
1)the devout and prominent sages and priests existed in b.c
2)their Big 3 are Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (one creates, one destroys just like Zeus and Ares)
3)these 3 created less powerfull Gods like the Sun God, Moon God etc...
4)out of those 3 came all the avatars, demigods etc who also had crazy adventures

    and finally Christianity:
    1) THe Father, THe Son and the holy Ghost
2)no destroyer here but on the other hand there were stories not in the bible before the time of Jesus about the angel of death... the antichrist and so on....
)also there are old testament stories of heroes who battled with angels like micheal or with other angels not sure...
lucifer also was an angel who was proud and vain... he was proud and vain because 'he' was so handsome... aphrodite has a lot of stories about her downfall because she was proud and vain.
also moses and elijah and God are also a 3 and in general visual depictions look a lot like zeus

oh yeah and God had the reputation that if he was seen a human the human would turn into ash or light something like that... the greek Gods have the same reputation

    my wannabe conclusion being:

we will never figure this out because humans are incapable of thinking 'logically' outside the boundary of time... and well God is :)
and God doesent really want us to figure it out cause the last time we tried to figure him out... we tried building a tower really tall and we somehow never got there... then he looked at us all the way down here and decided to get a brilliantly crazy sense of humour and just confuse us all to no end leaving us to depict him in crazy ways that only we understand and being able to communicate it only to people of our language... which of course will leave us arguing about the same God in different languages while being consumed by our ethnocentrism based 'civilizations'......

Now thats One cool masterplan. :)
